Oh my, I sighed when I caught such a terribly offended expression somewhere. Of course, it continued with the fact that it is a terrible American and Germanic holiday, so we Slavs...
Let's set the record straight and clear things up a bit.
Halloween was imported to the US by Irish and Scottish immigrants. If I'm not mistaken, the celebration of this holiday in the USA was significant until after 1846, and subsequently this holiday took hold in the entire society of the USA and in today's times it also reaches us.
So the name of this holiday comes from a Celtic environment, not a Germanic one. Haloween is not so much a holiday as the name of the eve before one of the Celtic holidays of this part of the year, which is Samhain. And in its essence, we would also find this holiday among our ancestors, only they would call it DŽADY. Today we call him Dušički. In time, it is forty days between autumnal equinox and the coming winter solstice. For the Celts, it was the time of the turn of summer and winter, and we could perceive there, so to speak, the celebration of the new year.
In many cultures, this period, as well as among the Slavs, was a time of giving thanks for the harvest and paying respect not only to the gods but also to one's ancestors. Paying respect to the ancestors was a frequent part of other ceremonial days, but this holiday was special in that the ancestors were invited to come and feast at the home table together with the living. You can find more about this holiday from me: CIRCLE OF THE YEAR, or from one of my books CIRCLES OF OLD SLAVS.
Well, back to Halloween. Every holiday, both among the Slavs and among the Celts, had a time when this holiday began, usually on the eve of the holiday itself or the holiday period, the so-called VILJA. Among the Celts, the eve of Samhain was called Haloween.
Although it is true that today's celebration of this holiday has shifted a bit, we will soon tell you where it started.
If you want to know something about me or me events, I will be happy.
